Crank It or Spank It?
March 29, 2007
An offline version of the web 2.0 concept…
My family was out running around tonight, and I was tired because I had been staring at the computer all day so I decided to run on down to the local convenience store for a coffee and to get out of the house.
I live out in the country in a small town in TX so it takes me a little longer to run to the convenience store. I cranked up my truck and pulled out of the driveway.
My radio was tuned to a country station and they were having a contest of sorts called, “Crank It or Spank It?”
I caught the tail end of it but the basic premise was for listeners to call in and let the DJ know if the song should be cranked up (i.e worthy of the headache), or spanked (I’m sure you get the point.)
But I thought to myself that this is a great example of what web 2.0 tries to do on the net. User contributed content.
This was accomplished because listeners were calling in and giving their opinion of the song (providing content for the station.)
But more importantly, they had the ability to influence the buying decision of others. This is the power of user contributed content.
The power online can be seen with social networking sites, blogs and forums. All provide interactivity between readers and publishers. Smart marketers use this to their advantage and apply proper marketing techniques to improve sales.
Are you ready to crank it or spank it?
