The Will to Succeed

November 7, 2006

The saying, “If there is a will, there is a way,” cannot be understated. Just ask the National Football League’s team, the Chicago Bears. A couple of weeks ago, they traveled to Phoenix to meet the Arizona Cardinals to play in a Monday Night Football game. Everyone was watching.

The Cardinals took the field by storm, led by their rookie quarterback Matt Leinart. The former USC, Heisman Trophy winner has known nothing but winning for the last four years. He led his team to two first quarter touchdowns to shock the Bears. In fact, the halftime score read: Cardinals-20, Bears-0.

On the other sideline, the Bears clearly were looking ahead to the next week for some time-off during their “bye week.” It seemed like they were huddling-up to discuss which resort they would book to enhance their trip to the land of the sun. As the game clock ticked, the Chicagoans still had not thawed out. I’m sure their half-time discussion was not about ‘Who’s driving’ to the Pussy Cat Lounge in Scottsdale after the game.

With about one minute left in the 3rd quarter, Leinart took a blind-sided, ball-jarring hit. The ball was scooped up by the Bears and scored. Cardinals: 20, Bears: 10. Thinking the Bears could come up with 2 touchdowns in the last stansa, I said to my wife, “This game is not over.” Because by all accounts, the game should have been over.

However, I had no idea what was about to happen. The Bears defense continued to control the game. The famed middle linebacker, Brian Urlacher, led the charge. He stripped the ball from running back Edgerrin James with about 5 minutes to play. The ball was scooped up by Charles Tillman and scored. Arizona receives the kickoff and takes about 2 minutes off of the clock before they punted the ball to Devin Hester. Hester returned the ball 82 yards for the score. Lienart marched his offense down the field to set up a Neil Rackers 40-yard field goal attempt. He missed. Game over. Cardinals: 23, Bears: 24.

Why did the Bears win? They are the first team in NFL history to win a game while committing 6 turnovers and failing to score an offensive touchdown. Rex Grossman, the Bears quarterback, was on an incredible roll through 5 games, until he ran into the Cardinals defense. On this night, Grossman threw 4 interceptions. He did his part to help the Cardinals win.

The Bears won the game because they had the will to succeed. The game was ‘over’ at halftime. Traditionally, teams make adjustments during the intermission and trade scores until the clock expires. In effect, the team who has the lead at the half should, in most cases, win the game. The Bears thought differently. They made up their minds that they would do everything within their power to change the fate of their course. The Bears offense struggled all night. But, the defense and the special teams carried the team to victory.

The Cardinals have only gone to one playoff game since 1947. Even though, today, this team is made up of people who weren’t even alive in ‘47, there is a will of defeat in that organization that every head coach that takes the job thinks he can change. His ego is big enough to believe that he is the one who can make them a winner. I have a feeling that the Cardinals head coach, Denny Green, is coaching his last season in Arizona. If so, the job vacancy will be filled with a coach who will benefit from the talent that Green has put together over the last 4 years. With some changes in the offensive line, the Cardinals will be better. Really?

Probably not. Why, you ask? Because they need an ownership who insists on excellence. They must support a coach who will change the culture in that organization. He must cultivate a will to succeed, especially when a game appears to be won, only to be lost with 3 minutes remaining (perhaps next time, Rackers will will the ball through the uprights when the Cardinals need it most). Matt Leinart will be the “field coach” that will sell his winning ways. He will be a great help to the new coach. Whether the rest of the team follows will remain to be seen.

Greg and I have become a team. We are still learning about each other since we began Blue Sky Brothers on this past September 1st. We are of one mindset. We bring years of business success to each other that is translating into a winning formula. Those years have taught us patience, self-discipline, and determination. We are excited to bring this network of valuable information to you. And while we have laid out a plan for success, all the strategizing will be in vain without the will to succeed.

I watched that game as well and was amazed as to what happened. I agree that committment to success has to be there because without you will never reach your potential.

If you don’t expect greatness how will you ever achieve it?

    Good stuff Jerry!

This was a great article! I think Matt L. is highly overrated and loved this win… thanks for the inspirational writing.

Got something to say?
