Making Money Online, Internet Marketing and Happiness

June 20, 2007

Why does a sane person engage in trying to earn a living online?

Let's be honest, very few make it.  It can be a tough business, especially if you don't have a plan of attack.  And it can be a costly business too.

I'm living proof!  Mental Note: Make sure you read some manuals before taking part in the PPC game.  I ruined my CTR and bank account before finally figuring it out!

I was so focused on making money online, that I just didn't do things properly out of the gate.  Of course, hindsight is 20/20.

But making money online is not so much about the money but more about the lifestyle, well at least for me.

I have two kids that I wanted to see more, a wife that I wanted to see and a home that I just wasn't spending time in.  MY JOB brought me everywhere but home.  So my goal and my enthusiasm were driven by the lifestyle of spending more time with my family and enjoying life in general.

That is why I wanted to make money online.

Subsequently, making more money for me is not about having more things but about having more choices.  Listen, I'm not talking about the decision that needs to be made when choosing your cell phone, "hmmmm should I get the Blackjack or wait and get the much more expensive but cooler iPhone."

I don't mean that kind of decision.

I mean the kind you make when you wake up in the morning…"should I login and start blogging or should I spend an hour or so and hang out with my kids" Or how about, "should I go to the beach for a week with my family or should I work'"

Those are the decision that I want to be confronted with.  Having the option to make those kinds of decision are the ones that I want.

Recently, I found a very interesting article on CNNMoney.com, appropriately titled, Can Money Buy Happiness?

For illustration purposes I took a snippet from the article because I learned a new phrase that I think you'll like.  It's called, "hedonic treadmill."  Here's the excerpt:

You overestimate how much pleasure you'll get from having more. Humans are adaptable creatures, which has been a plus during assorted ice ages, plagues and wars. But that's also why you're never all that satisfied for long when good fortune comes your way. While earning more makes you happy in the short term, you quickly adjust to your new wealth–and everything it buys you. Yes, you get a thrill at first from shiny new cars and TV screens the size of Picasso's Guernica. But you soon get used to them, a state of running in place that economists call the "hedonic treadmill."

Do yourself a favor and spend the time reading this article and then reflect.  It helps put everything in perspective.

Then I have another favor…

    Hey, Greg:

    So true!

In another study, I read that if people have all of their needs paid for, and most of what they want through their earnings, they are happy and full. Any more money they might earn/have doesn’t make them any happier.

It is said, “Happiness is a choice.” In order for any of us to be as wildly successful as we dream, I believe, starting the day by making the conscious decision, “I am happy,” is a must.

All the Best to you & yours, my Friend,
    Jerry
