‘Writer’s Block’ and ‘Get Rich Quick’: Musings about Blogging and Internet Marketing

May 22, 2007

One of the problems with blogging is the occasional ‘writer’s block.’

Tonight is one of those nights……so, I’ll just keep typing.  But, before you tune me out, hear me out.

As I’m going through an evening like this one, I go to the Technorati 100 to get some ideas about topics of interest.  After reading a half-dozen or so, I have an idea to share……writer’s block and ‘get rich quick.’

They are like oil and water.  They don’t mix,……at all.

Look, there is no such thing as a ‘get rich quick’ scheme when it comes to blogging.  As Greg and I have been studying the gurus and anyone else of note, we have come to the determination that it takes just that, determination.
For example, one of Eric Holmlund’s tips is quoted in the post I did last Friday.  He encourages using urgency and scarcity to sell.  I have no problem with creating urgency and scarcity.  Time and quantity are not guaranteed in any occasion (only death and taxes, right?).

Holmlund says he has been internet marketing since 1999 and full-time since 2004.  He has been ‘at it’ for 8 YEARS!  If he’s making the kind of money that you want, well, he’s paid his dues.

There are no shortcuts, BUT…….

Did you notice our PageRank?  It is still a “3”.  We expect it to move to a “4” anytime now, thanks to you.  Beginning this blog at the first of ‘07, it really did only take us 90 days to get to a “3”.  And, as we continue to provide quality content, we expect the PageRank curve to get steeper and steeper as we climb the rankings.

There are no shortcuts, but we’ve been able to build a considerable following (thank you!) because we make the time to find great content, social network like crazy, and post tirelessly.

I would encourage you to share the load with someone.  Greg is a great partner.  We talk about an hour a day, making sure we are doing what we need to do to meet our goals.  We are constantly measuring metrics, thinking about innovative techniques, and studying/discussing what the gurus are doing and how to incorporate their guidance.

I’d also add that the internet marketing business is trendy.  Much like offline businesses, the trendsetters start ‘fires’ that customers either respond to or don’t.  Either way, the trendsetters are experimenting.  Having the courage to overcome the failures to receive the blessings of success is the only road to take.

Finally, I’ll add that the trendsetters commit a fair amount of time on the front end of their businesses establishing solid foundations.  They have a system or formula for success they have developed so as to respond quickly to the buying needs of their customers.

Oh, and that bit about ‘getting rich quick’, well, think about it.  What is rich?  Not to be too technical, but don’t we all have what we need and most of what we want?  So, what is ‘rich’?  $100K?  $250K?  $1 million?

If Greg and I split a million dollars, I will have $500K.  Pay taxes, and I’ll have about $300-350K.  Divide that by 12, and I’m at about $25-30K/month.  Not bad, but hardly retirement money.  Remember, I divided that by 12.  Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes gives away $10 million occasionally, I think.  If I won that, I would be ‘rich quick.’  Ya feelin’ me now?  There ain’t no shortcuts to real wealth.

In a graduate-level, seminary program I attended several years ago, one professor gave me some great advice regarding overcoming ‘writer’s block’.  He told his students of 15 to “just start typing.  Type whatever comes to mind and before long, the block disappears.”

I guess so.
