Website Hosting For Blogs and Salespages

July 15, 2009

I want to share a recent issue that I had with my website hosting service.  Actually, to be completely transparent, the issue that I am going to share effected other areas of my business as well as my personal business.

About four months ago I started getting email notifications from my hosting service that my sites were deactivated and that I would need to call their support 800 number to resolve the problem.

To fully understand the severity of this, you also need to understand that I have A LOT of sites up.  And the better website hosting services allow you to add multiple domains (they operate independently.)  So when one site was deactivated then all the sites under that account were deactivated.

As you can imagine this situation directly affected my income.  Needless to say, I immediately took action and easily got my sites reactivated.

What had happened, and I don’t know how, my account was hacked and spammers were using my account to send their trash to many unsuspecting targets.

AND IT WAS COMING FROM MY DOMAINS!!!

I will give the hosting service credit.  They listened to me, and they helped me do some things related to my sites to protect myself from these attacks.

The larger problem, I would come to find out about a month and half into it, was that they have a three strike policy.

You guessed it.  My accounts were hacked for a third time and I was contact by them (Hosting Service) and they politely asked me to move my sites to another hosting service.

I don’t want to vilify the hosting service, so I won’t, but I do want to stress the point, that you must protect yourself.

  1. Don’t share your hosting login details with anybody, even your virtual assistant.
  2. Make sure you establish a difficult password.  Maybe even use the system generated password system.
  3. Don’t use the same passwords for all of your accounts

Hopefully following these three steps you can eliminate any problems you may have.  It is human nature to spend time on immediate task, I am just like that, so normally I do not pay attention to these articles.  My recommendation is to be careful.

Recommendation:

As I mentioned earlier in the post I have a lot of sites up and generating cash for me.  Needless to say I have them spread out on different hosting platforms for two reasons:

  1. First and probably the most important is that I spread out my risk.  If the sites go down, the server goes down for any reason it won’t effect of of my income;
  2. I discover new hosting services through recommendations.  So when I have a new project I try them out.

Currently I am using Host Monster and I am really happy with them.  The next time you need a service you should check them out.

Thanks for reading this post!

Building an Online Business with Greg and Jerry

I’m sure by now you’re wondering what is going on with the “Blue Sky Brothers” and their blog?  I must admit I’m a little embarrassed.  Normally I fancy myself as somebody that can multitask with the best of them.  In this case, however, I fell short.  I do have good reason…

First off, if you’re reading this, then thank you for remaining a loyal reader and subscriber.  Believe it or not we have actually gained subscribers even though I haven’t posted on BSB in over a month.

Jerry and I have been through many changes over the last three years and we’ve changed direction so to speak.
