Advertising Tips For Success
December 17, 2007
Before You Spend Advertising Dollars…
The important work of advertising is done before you spend any money and it’s an unfortunate truth that many business owners skip these steps altogether and end up throwing a lot of money into a bottomless pit.
Before you advertise you have to know who you want to advertise to. This means that you have a clear idea of who your target market is and you know why you are uniquely suited to serve them. If you struggle in this area it will pay to take time out now to nail it down.
If you have your target market all worked out, you’re ready for the next step.
Evaluating your website
Have you ever read a wonderful ad and been motivated to click through to check out their website, only to be disappointed by what you see when you get there? It can be easy to devote all of your attention to the ad you place and forget to take a good look at the web pages that will get the desired traffic and decide if they are ready to perform for you.
- Is your website easy to navigate?
- Is there an attractive header graphic?
- Are your images clean and sharp?
- Is there sufficient info to let a visitor make an informed decision?
- Can you find contact info?
- Can you find shipping info?
- Can you find pricing info?
- Are there testimonials from satisfied customers?
When evaluating your individual web pages you need to know what you want. Every page has a purpose and you should be able to identify that purpose right away.

December 5, 2007
I met with the Minister of Spiritual Formation today.
“No, he’s not the Dalai Lama.”
Actually, he’s just a regular guy; a Christian staffer with a heart
for ministering to people from a spiritually-sensitive
point-of-view, one might say (he has education & small group
ministry responsibilities, just to name a couple).
For me, the conversation reached a climax when he began
to discuss that learning the Scriptures is more than
memorization. It is about transformation.
THAT got my juices flowing; THAT got me thinking:
“TRANSFORMATION.”
What an exciting word……transformation.
Everything around us is so temporary:
we have disposable watches;
we have disposable diapers;
we have disposable tissues
(just kidding…..seeing if you’re paying attention).
The point: do we have the patience for anything that can
transform us……or our blog?
We are such a Now-society. It is challenging for us to wait
in a line of 3 to pay for our groceries. How many of us, realizing
we have more than 20 items, put goods back on the shelf so
we can checkout through the express lane?
Good grief! What is happening to us? What are we in a rush to do?
And then, when we arrive to the ‘place’ where we are going, we
are too exhausted to do what we intended to do in the first place.
“Beam me up, Scotty!”
How can transformation occur when you are too busy or too exhausted?
Maybe, you are not writing an inspiring blog post because you are
exhausted from reacting to your world.
Can you communicate effectively enough to ‘turn someone on’?
What can you communicate that will inspire the world?
The minister asked me how Blogging For Riches is doing. I told
him it is doing well; we are making sales. He followed with,
“I have 2 blogs. I last wrote on one of them over a year ago.”
Then, he said what many of you are thinking, “I don’t have
anything to say. And if I did, who’s going to read it anyway.”
Ah……….gotcha!
I told him that people love hot gossip, or human interest stories.
People always like to feel better about their situations by reveling
in the plight of others (sad, but true).
And, I said, “You’re an expert at what you do. Not everyone knows
what you know. Mixed-in with a talent to articulate a good story,
you will have more and more readers reading your blog.”
Since the Internet charged into our lives in the mid-90’s, you’ve
had an ever-expanding megaphone at your fingertips:
a little knowledge, some honed-in skill, and a spoonful of talent,
and you’ve got yourself quite a stump!
So, find the courage to find your voice.
“Be transformed.
Then, blog about it.
Watch it transform others.”
PS: The minister and I have had coffee a time or two recently.
In parting ways today, he said, “I like getting together with you;
it energizes me.”
PPS: It is rare when any of us get the benefit of such feedback.
PPPS: If you could hear your friend’s thought about spending time
with you, what would s/he say?
Leave a comment, please.

December 3, 2007
If a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, did it make a noise?
“Absolutely not.”
“Huh?”
Let me explain.
Well, the tree fell and in doing so, it made a crashing sound. Clearly, if a microphone
was monitoring the fall, it would have recorded the cracking timber.
However, no one heard it.
It made no noise because no one heard it.
Do you feel like you are making no noise with your blog?
Are you doing “everything right” and it seems like no one is reading your stuff?
The obvious answer is ‘driving traffic’. Yeah, you hear that everywhere.
But, what does it mean?
It means that you are winning the popularity contest when you are driving traffic.
You are getting attention because you are providing noteworthy content.
You are contributing content of quality to your readers.
As in art appreciation, so too is blog popularity. If beauty is in the eye of the
beholder, so too is the ‘beauty’ of one’s blog. In plain English, the quality
of your content is determined by your readers (or not). Then, therefore, your
popularity will be determined. If your stuff is liked, readers will respond.
The key is finding your niche. When you are in ‘your element’, your readers will
‘catch-on’ to your gift…….eventually, readers will come.
A little shortcut: social bookmarking
You gotta ’stump’ for it. Like any politician running for office, I hate to put it this way,
but you gotta go get the vote. You must be involved in multiple, social bookmarking
sites to create a following.
Otherwise, you will fall without making a noise.

latest product, Blogging For Riches.
